Shannon’s Art Exhibits

Current Sales/Exhibits

Winter 2011

I have my book and Shannon’s cards, prints and several original art pieces nicely settled at the Cochrane Cookhouse and Artisan Market and it will be there for a year. So go to Cochrane, just a nice drive, and see this cute little store. They are also going to have a community kitchen, a commercial kitchen, so people can make their products there and sell the food as well. Won’t that be fun. ~ Kathy

Fall 2011

An exhibition sponsored by Studio C: a Prospect project:

The Reluctant Artist: Shannon Morgan
September 1-30, 2011

Shannon Morgan, B.Des. was a graduate of ACAD in Visual Communications and worked for a short time in her field before she was hit with depression, OCD and agoraphobia that did not respond to drugs or therapy.  In helplessness and despair, she took her life in 2009. Her art is varied and imaginative. She painted openly from emotion, but never believed her art was good enough to bring out of the closet where she had it hidden away. Well, here it is in all it’s glory – portraits, illustration, land and skyscapes and sketches. Come and enjoy the passion Shannon had for her art.

Two Mothers’ Art Show, April 10, 2010

Michelle Dann died in November 6, 2008 and Shannon Morgan died by suicide January 20, 2009, just over two months apart. Both families were totally devastated. Kathy Briant, Shannon’s mom was determined to have the art Shannon hid away brought forward for everyone to see and Diane Dann, Michelle’s mom, was dragged 6 months later to an art class by a friend who thought learning to paint would be therapeutic. Much to Diane’s surprise she began to paint and paint and paint. Both mothers wanted their daughter’s memory to be honoured, so Diane decided she wanted to show and sell the art inspired by her daughter and invited Kathy to participate and show Shannon’s art as well. Proceeds from Diane Dann’s art will be donated to charity. Diane and Kathy would like everyone to come to an art show in honour of their two daughters. An art show in memoriam to Shannon and Michelle; 40 pieces to view and buy.

Venturion Art Gallery, February 19-21, 2010

To honour her talent and her passion for art and to ensure that at least her art lives, an art show has been arranged for Shannon. A portion of the proceeds from any sales goes to Canadian Mental Health. [Later on] there will be a web site for her as well which will ensure her work will always be available. Suicide is epidemic in North America. 90% of all suicides have a mental health component and the waste in human life and potential is enormous. Through the exhibiting of her art and sale of some of her pieces, it is hoped that more can be done in the way of prevention of suicide and improving the health of those suffering from a mental illness. I hope all those who knew her, as well as those who have an interest in art will be able to come sometime during the three days her work will be on view at her one and only art gallery show.

Shannon Kathleen Morgan

SHANNON KATHLEEN MORGAN May 13, 1975 – January 20, 2009

Shannon had her first public artwork displayed in Grade 3, when a visiting fabric artist held a contest for a piece of fabric art which was to be hung in the open area library at Ranchlands Community School. It hung there for many years. Her school life was up and down until she found Alternative High School, where she entered with a 37 average and graduated with an average in the 80s. ACAD was intense and challenging since she chose Visual Communications and “we” got her degree, B.Des., with me sleeping in the car in my pj’s in the parking lot of a copy place while she frantically put together yet another project at 2:00 in the morning. But finally she graduated and worked for a while in the design field before she was hit with a depression that never went away. In the end, she also suffered from OCD and agoraphobia and could not leave her apartment. After eight years of fighting her mental illness, in hopelessness and despair, she gave up and took her life in January of 2009. Shannon herself did not believe she did anything useful with her life, though people found her to be warm, kind and a bright light. She hid her art away and would not show it to anyone. Most people she knew later on did not even know she was an artist and were totally unaware of the breadth and depth of her artistic ability. Her art shows a wide variety of styles in many media and varied subject matter. She never limited herself to just one style, though of interest to her was the play of light and dark, the human body, landscapes, still life and the world of imagination and illustration of her imagination. She had just started her career in design when she suddenly went into a severe depression, which she never came out of. Had she lived it would have been interesting to follow her continued progress in art and design as it evolved over the years. However, she did leave approximately 120 pieces, which is still a considerable body of work. Unfortunately, we will never know what she would have become.
